EI Vice President Laura Malowane, testified before the Fairfax Circuit Court of Virginia on damages stemming from alleged defamation of a former employee on behalf of Raytheon Company, et al. Plaintiff, Cynthia Hyland, alleged that the defendants issued statements defaming her and that these statements resulted in her termination as a senior executive from Raytheon. She further claimed that, as a result of these statements and subsequent termination, she suffered as much as $6.5 million in economic damages. By comparing Ms. Hyland’s previous and current compensation package, including salary, cash bonus, stock options and grants and retirement benefits, Dr. Malowane showed that Ms. Hyland was economically better off as a senior executive at her new employer, Northrop Grumman, than she would have been had she remained employed at Raytheon. As a result, Dr. Malowane testified, Ms. Hyland suffered no economic damages. The jury found for the defendants on July 1, 2009. The defendants were represented by Hunton & Williams and Willkie Farr & Gallagher. Dr. Malowane was assisted by EI Senior Vice President Jeffry Davis and Senior Economist Allison Holt.
