In November, EI Principal and Board Chairman Barry C. Harris presented testimony at the European Commission in Brussels about strategic alliances in transportation industries in general and the parcel tanker industry in particular. The hearing related to an EC Statement of Objections related to potential anticompetitive practices among parcel tanker operators. At the hearing, Dr. Harris noted that strategic alliances are common throughout the transportation industry and that such alliances tend to provide efficiencies and consumer benefits. Dr. Harris further noted that strategic alliances require effective coordination among firms and distinguished communications among firms related to legitimate alliances from collusive activity. The EC has not yet issued its ruling in this matter.
